An SUP race is on in celebration of Mother's Day AND the 100th Anniversary of the City of Ft. Lauderdale! It happens May 8, 2011 between 7 am and 5 pm at

Ark Boards is excited to present the Auto Nation Stand Up Paddleboard Challenge to be held on Mother’s Day, May 8th in conjunction with the City of Fort Lauderdale’s centennial celebration across from The International Swimming Hall of Fame.

This is a two day event with Michael Phelps and all the world's top olympic swimmers competing in a 10k swim race in the ocean on Saturday, followed by a new world record high dive attempt into 12 inches of water. Many surprise celebrities will be in attendance all weekend.

The stand up paddleboard (SUP) races will start at 9:00 AM on Sunday. We are encouraging everyone who is interested in the sport to come down to participate in free lessons and free races. The first race of the day is the stock board division. Entry fee is only $20 and is intended for the beginner/intermediate paddlers who are looking to have fun. No race boards are allowed in the first race and the age divisions are 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 and over for both men and women.

The second race of the day will be the Elite race. Here you will see some of Florida’s top SUP racers compete in a four-mile race consisting of four laps with a beach run between each lap. To celebrate Mother’s Day, the third race will be a relay race consisting of a team of two or three people. The team must consist of a mother/sibling(s). This race is free to all teams that enter and will consist of three ¼ mile laps with riders changing after each lap. After the mom’s finish racing there will be sprint races. Once again this race is free to all that enter. Heats of ten will compete around a ¼ mile lap with the top three advancing to the finals for both men’s and women’s divisions. The final race of the day is for kids 12 and under. Sure to be the highlight of the day, kids will race around a single buoy about 50 yards out from the beach. This race is free to all that enter.

Trophies will be given out for each race along with prize packages for the top racers. Free SUP lessons and demos will be available by Ark Boards and Gold Coast Aquatic Adventures all day Saturday and Sunday across from the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Two-time, SUP long distance World Record holder Tom Jones will be in attendance as we raise money and awareness for A Plastic Free Ocean, www.plasticfreeocean.org.
